Canada defeats USA, qualifies for World Cup

The Canadian men’s field hockey team defeated the United States 2-1 in overtime Sunday afternoon to win the 2009 Pan American Cup in Santiago, Chile. The victory qualifies Canada for the 2010 World Cup of Hockey.
North Vancouver’s Paul Wettlaufer scored the game winning goal four minutes into extra time to send the Canadian men’s team to its first World Cup since 1998 where they finished in eighth-place. It was Wettlaufer’s first goal of the tournament…

The Canadian national women’s field hockey team defeated Team Ireland 2-1 Sunday afternoon in Dublin. It was the final of a three-match official test series between the two sides.
Abigail Raye (Kelowna, BC) scored the game-winner in what was her first international goal put the Canadians up 2-1 with twelve minutes remaining in the game. The Canadian women’s national field hockey team tied Ireland "A" 2-2 in their second exhibition match in as many days. The Canadians competed much harder in today’s game after dropping a 2-0 decision on Monday. A number of strong attacks were created up the right hand side but despite generating numerous 25-yard penetrations Canada was unable to capitalize on their early possession.

In the first game of the Women’s National field hockey team’s Ireland Series, Team Ireland A defeated Canada by a score of 2-0.
The Irish team came out strong owning much of the play in the first half. Their first goal was scored at the 4 minute mark on a penalty corner by Roisin Flinn.

The Canadian National Women’s Field Hockey team will travel to Dublin, Ireland January 9 – 19th for a series of test matches versus the Irish. The tour is in preparation for the 2009 Pan American Cup taking place in Bermuda in early February.
