Men’s World Cup Squad Selection Camp

Following last month’s successful campaign to win the Pan American Cup in Santiago and direct qualification to the 2010 World Cup in New Delhi, the Canadian Men’s Team is formally initiating it’s World Cup preparation.

Head Coach Alan Brahmst announced that the first project for the Champions of the Americas is a 4-day National Selection Camp scheduled for June 4 – 7 in Vancouver. Field Hockey Canada’s objective for this camp is to identify the World Cup squad of 28-30 athletes, who will form the core group of players participating in the preparation projects over the next 10 months…

Dinos Athletics has announced that field hockey will remain a varsity sport at the University of Calgary in 2009-10 after the establishment of an alternative funding model.

Funding cuts as the result of a program review and restructuring of the Athletics Department were announced on April 15, opening up the possibility that field hockey could be withdrawn from CIS competition prior to the fall of 2009.  Over the past two weeks, however, the field hockey community was able to work with Dinos Athletics to create a viable plan to fund the team through the 2009 varsity season…

Former junior national team athlete Jeff Pacheco has been named the new women’s field hockey coach for the Western Mustangs, taking over the reigns of women’s field hockey program from Brenyn Hodge who recently stepped down to focus on her family.

After serving as assistant with Hodge since 2006, Pacheco will look to build the women’s field hockey program at Western which has seen rapid improvement over the past three seasons…

H1N1 Virus Cancels India Series in Surrey

The exhibition and test matches featuring the Canadian women’s national
field hockey team versus Team India, which were to be played between
May 26th and June 4th in Surrey, British Columbia, have been canceled.
Ms Amrit Bose, Hon. Secretary General of the Indian Hockey
Confederation, informed FHC that the decision not to travel to Canada
was based on the advisement from her Department of Sports not to visit
the countries where swine flu cases have been found…

Canada to Host Team India at Tamanawis Field

Field Hockey Canada and the Indian Hockey Confederation are happy to announce a 5-match Test Series featuring the Canadian National Women’s field hockey team versus Team India. The Series will take place in late May 2009 at Tamanawis Field in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.

Field Hockey BC has announced its rosters for Team BC U16 Blue and Team BC U16 White who will be competing at the 2009 U16 National Championships in Mississauga, Ontario.

The teams will train throughout June and July leading to their participation in the BC U18 Invitational Tournament from July 16 – 19 in Vancouver, as well as the U16 Nationals which run July 30 – August 3.

New FIH Rules of Hockey – Free Hit

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has released the revised free hit rules because of the great interest in them.

The next Rules of Hockey will take affect from 1 May 2009 and the full set of rules will be published as soon as possible.
Field Hockey Canada encourages our member clubs, teams, and officials to begin experimenting with the new rules before they come into effect.

Canada upsets Argentina to advance to Pan Am Cup final

March 14, 2009

The Canadian men’s field hockey team upset top-ranked Argentina 4-3 in overtime Saturday afternoon in the semi-finals of the Pan American Cup in Santiago, Chile. Canada faces the United States on Sunday afternoon with the winner qualifying for the 2010 World Cup of Hockey.

Connor Grimes of Duncan, British Columbia scored the game winner 10 minutes into extra time.

Argentina led 3-2 with less than three minutes remaining in regulation when Surrey, British Columbia’s Gabbar Singh scored on a penalty corner to send the game to overtime…
