“A lot of thoughts go through my mind every time I put on that jersey. I think about the team. I think about all the players that have represented Canada in the years past. There have always been hard times, but every group finds a way to succeed.” – Philip Wright, Men's National Team
Field hockey in Canada is characterized by a gutsy spirit and strong sense of community pride. As we prepare to host the 2013 Men's Pan American Cup in Brampton and the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, we have the opportunity to contribute to this legacy and build upon a proud culture of winning on the international stage. Our Women’s National Team is looking for a top finish at the 2013 Women’s Pan American Cup in Argentina, and the Under-21 National Teams currently have their sights set on success at the 2013 Junior World Cups.
In the face of recent drastic funding cuts, we are inspired by the challenge of continuing to pursue our goals. To ensure long term success we must also create opportunities for the development of athletes at all skill levels. Canada’s National Athletes were once rookies at a club, inspired by the thought of representing their country. As elite-level athletes, they continue fighting for that dream - and igniting that flame in future generations.
In addition to pursuing their Olympic dreams – National Team Athletes have become increasingly involved with local field hockey programs and clubs. As part of the BIG PUSH campaign, members of Team Canada are looking at a number of ways they can reach out, inspire and support developing athletes, including:
1. Speaking to athletes about goal-setting and playing for Canada.
2. Guest-coaching opportunities for a game or practice.
3. Getting involved in club events or community events.
As our National Team Athletes support the community, we encourage you and your clubs to support Canada’s athletes through a charitable donation via CHIMP. This is the BIG PUSH. We are calling on athletes, coaches, officials, alumni, friends, parents and teams to rally around our National Teams as they pursue the podium and inspire the next generations of Canadian field hockey athletes! By providing financial and moral support for our National Teams - we can support our athletes as they focus on training, competing and winning.
Each National Team has a giving group on CHIMP, through which tax-receipted donations are being collected. If you get involved in one of these giving groups, you will receive personalized communications from the team, special access to supporter photos and videos, and much more.
