Canada had a strong game against Uruguay today in Rio winning in convincing style 3-0. The Canadian team has consistently generated a large number of offensive plays throughout the tournament but has failed to convert their opportunities. Today they were able to make better use of the ball in offense than Uruguay generating more scoring opportunities. The first goal of the game came in the 13th minute when Katie Baker dove on the turf to slot a penalty corner strike from Andy Rushton. The effort was followed by an outstanding corner conversion by Katie Rushton in the last minute of the first half with Canada heading to the break 2-0.
In the second half ball possession moved from end to end with Uruguay generating more chances than they had done in the first half. Azelia Liu, Andy Rushton and Clare Linton were strong in defense denying the Uruguay team anything on the score board. Andy Rushton put Canada's third goal on the board in the 61st minute with an outstanding reverse shot on net after a scramble following an attack penalty corner. Canada look forward to avenging their initial loss to Cuba on the first days' play with a rematch on July 24th. In the other pool game for 5-8th position Cuba defeated Brazil 7-0.
