Game Reports

May 20 - Holland - Canada : 4-0

The Netherlands Women's Team beat the Canadians 4 - 0 in a practice International at Laren. At halftime the score was 3 - 0. In front of 502 spectators, Van de Kieft (18'), Moreira de Melo (29'), Teeuwen (34') and Van der Weilen (39') scored the goals.

The team of national coach Tom van't Hek is preparing for the Champions Trophy that starts in Brisbane, Australia on the 10th of June. Next week they will play more practice games against Germany.

from Dutch Teletext

Canada completed their Holland training phase with an extremely tough game against the Dutch National Team at the Laren Sports Club. The Dutch team are superb and their skill and speed of execution were similar to the Australian Team Canada played at the Commonwealth Games. It was an excellent opportunity to play them.

Unfortunately the Canadian team came out on their heels. The strong pressure of the Dutch forced Canada deep into their backfield. Canada struggled to find their rhythm and were unable to develop a sustained attack.

Canada's goalkeeper Sarah Forbes faced 26 shots, she was able to keep the team in the match. Assistant Coach Deb Whitten was extremely pleased with her goaltender's performance.

Head Coach Dru Marshall said "it was perfect to come to Holland in preparation for the Pan Am Games although the finish was disappointing. The games were excellent, we've identified key things to work on in our future preparation."

As the team finished this four week training phase, they are left with one impression:

Just keep driving in ever narrowing circles and you'll get wherever you are going.

May 19 - Holland U-21 - Canada : 1-1

The Canadian team faced off against the Dutch U21 Team for the second time in two days. A sounder surface to play on resulted in a very hard running game from both teams.

The Canadian squad was ready to go off the 1st whistle. Canada was an attacking threat from the beginning. Their efforts were rewarded when Lisa Eastman executed a beautiful leading pass to Karen MacNeill on the left. MacNeill broke free, drew the ball and cranked the reverse stick shot passed the keeper in the 11th minute.

The Dutch team responded with a few great opportunities of their own, but goalkeeper Ann Harada stood her ground and made some key saves to keep Canada in the lead. The Canadian side had a wonderful 1st half with some great passing plays leading to a threatening attack. Attacker Kristen Taunton was pleased with the teams performance and said "I thought we used each other much better. Our support was highly effective."

The Dutch team finally got on the scoreboard in the 67th minute on a great deflection. Coach Dru Marshall said "It was a very good game. We have to learn the lesson of keeping a team off the scoreboard at the end of a game. It is perfect to be here at this time, the games are excellent. This series of games so far has been perfect preparation for the upcoming Pan American Games".

May 18 - Holland U-21 - Canada : 2-1

Canada's match against the Dutch U-21 was the first game ever played on the club's new artificial turf. This inaugural match saw 73 falls in the first 35 minutes!.. Starting right midfielder Michelle Bowyer said "We should have sharpened our skates!"

The Dutch seemed to have trouble adapting to the Canadian pressure and we produced a number of offensive opportunities early in the game. There was good end to end play. The first goal was a result of a penalty stroke in the 28th minute. Canada equalized on a blistering penalty corner shot by Lisa Faust that hit the backboard halfway up, but the goal was called back on a discretinary call by the umpire. In the 65th minute, Canada officially scored when Lauralee Kopeck and Carla Somerville connected on an attacking free hit.

Unfortunately, the Dutch U21 were very prompt in responding. They scored within a minute to take the lead on a miscue by goalkeeper Sarah Forbes.

"It was a great experience to play - disappointing that the field affected the standard of play. We continued to try different combinations of people and we have really focussed on the process and not the result. We've accomplished a lot of our objectives on this tour," stated head coach Dru Marshall. The slipperyness of the field made it very difficult to complete technical and tactical skills. Canada looks forward to meeting the Dutch U21 on a sounder surface May 19th.

May 15 - S.C.H.C. - Canada : 1-0

Canada travelled to Utrecht to play SCHC, the largest club in Holland. Canada played a strong match, and created numerous opportunities but unfortunately did not capitalize on their chances. This game was a good opportunity for the Canadian squad to try some new tactical strategies and new penalty corners.

In the 53rd minute of play, SCHC slipped the ball passed goalkeeper Ann Harada who was bumped off her path while attempting to make the save. Coach Dru Marshall says "It was a disappointing loss - many lessons were learned!"

May 14 - H.D.M. - Canada : 0-2

Happy Birthday to BJ Steadward!

The Canadian Team headed into today's game with confidence and determination. After a day of practice, the squad was eager to take on the first division HDM Club team.

The team started off strong with great attack in the first 10 minutes. The Dutch team were quick on the transition and had some fast forwards. Canada held HDM at bay and early in the game Chris Hunter scored on a great rebound goal out of mid air only to have it called back due to a foot somewhere in the circle. The Canucks then capitalized on a penalty corner in the 32nd minute by Lauralee Kopeck on a rebound.

The second half saw end to end action by both teams with a number of scoring chances. Sarah Forbes played in net for Canada and made some strong saves late in the second half to keep the Dutch scoreless. Karen McNeill then got the ball in the circle and ripped a shot past their keeper in the 64th minute.

Coach Dru Marshall was "pleased with the Canadian effort. It's great to be here because the opposition are technically and tactically sound and we are able to see our tactical breakdowns. The goals we scored today were very positive. We gave up 7 corners today and no goals against which is huge: in the previous 7 games we gave up at least one penalty corner goal per game. It was great to break that trend. Another great learning experience!!"

May 12 - H.G.C. - Canada : 1-1

Goals scored at:
- 56th min (Canada)
- 67th min (HGC)

An excited and confident squad of 18 began their series of 6 games today in Wassenaar, Holland vs HGC. The game ended in a 1 - 1 draw, a great stepping stone to begin the Dutch tour. Coach Dru Marshall said: "It was an experienced opposition that provided a perfect opportunity to test some things. The team played well, but had problems with technical execution, most likely related to jet lag. We are excited to play the rest of the games and continue learning"

Canada's goal was scored when Christine Hunter poked the rebound off a penalty corner shot past the keeper and the Dutch defender. The Dutch club came back very late in the game and scored on a penalty corner of their own - a direct shot that squeezed under the goalkeeper Sarah Forbes.
