March 16 - Canada - Jamaica : 4-0 - Half-time: 0-0
The Canadians regrouped after a disappointing tie against the US to beat Jamaica in their final game of pool play.
In order to have a chance to get into the final of this tournament, Canada needed to score a goal every 5 minutes to make up the goal differential between Canada and the US. Unfortunately, Canada had trouble finding their flow in the early stages of the game. They finally capitalised in the 25th minute when Carla Somerville put the ball past the Jamaican keeper. Both teams retired to their respective benches at halftime with Canada in the lead 1-0.
On to the second half! Canada continued to have trouble on their offensive penalty corners in this game. Meanwhile, they scored some magnificent free play goals. In the 53rd minute, Karen MacNeill made a great reception at the top of the circle, turned on a dime and drove the ball past the keeper. In the last five minutes of the game Canada found their flow scoring 2 goals in 3 minutes. For Canada's third goal, Karen MacNeill threaded the ball through the Jamaican defenders to Becky Price sitting at the stroke mark waiting to hammer it in! What a beauty! Then, in the 69th minute Michelle Bowyer tipped the ball into the top of the net off of Kristen Taunton's hit into the circle. A magnificent goal!
So, Canada ended the game winning 4-0 but it was not enough to get them to the Final. We now gear up for the match for 3rd place against Uruguay!
March 15 - Canada - USA : 1-1 - Half-time: 0-0
Both teams were a little tentative at the beginning of the game trying to feel each other out. The Americans pressed first creating a few penalty corners early on. Canada's penalty corner defense played well and blocked USA's first attempt. Their second corner was halted when Lisa Faust stepped up and walked out of the circle with the ball. The end to end action continued when Canada pressed hard but could not buy a corner from the British umpire in the first half.
Sarah Forbes was at the top of her game making a few key saves on penalty corners. The strong Canadian defense continued to perform when Julia Wong stepped up on another penalty corner, spoiling the Yanks' hopes to score.
The teams went to their respective benches at halftime deadlocked at 0-0. The second half was definitely going to be a promising one.
Both teams continued to battle. Canada was a little more defensive in the first 10 minutes. But in the 48th minute Jenny "Zoom" Johnson nailed a blistering shot from the top right side of the circle at knee height past the American keeper into the mesh. In her excitement, she threw her hands into the air but unfortunately her stick continued to travel another 25 feet straight up! Although it didn't land near anybody, the American keeper rushed the umpire whining for a call. Jenny was sent off for 10 minutes for a non-malicious foul. Canada weathered the storm, actually continuing to attack against the Americans even though we were down a player. Approximately 3 minutes later, American captain Jill Reeves was sent off for deliberately being within 5 metres of the ball on a Canadian free hit.
In the 62nd minute the Americans evened the score on a broken play off the penalty corner. Although Canada pressed in the dying minutes of the game by adding an extra attacker, they were unable to score a winning goal. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.

March 13 - Canada - Mexico : 2-0 - Half-time: 1-0
Well, we definitely have to say that Canada started with a bang. They intercepted the ball off the Mexican push back. And Becky Price was off and running on the right side. Once in the circle, Becky made a great cross to the left side. The rebound came off the goalie's pads and Amy MacFarlane was there to hammer the ball out of the air and into the net in the 1st minute of play!
The Canadian side played really well for the first 10 minutes of the first half. They dominated the play, having most of the possession, but they had no real threatening chances. Mexico assembled a few attacking threats, getting a shot or two on keeper Forbes. So, Canada went into half-time leading 1-0.
The second half saw Canada add to their lead when Karen MacNeill made a great pass to Sue Tingley, who then traversed into the circle and scored in the 42nd minute. In the 65th minute, Becky Price broke through and took a great reverse stick shot going just wide of the target. Canada continued to press with a flurry of penalty corners in the last 2 minutes but could not capitalise on those opportunities. We come away from this game with the 3 points we needed and now we look forward to the much anticipated game against the US.

March 10 - Canada - Argentina : 1 - 5 - Half-time: 1-3
To begin, we would all like to congratulate Jumbo on receiving her 150th International Cap!!!
Both teams came out strong, with some end-to-end action. The Argies took advantage of their first Penalty Corner of the game in the 7th minute to go ahead 1-0. It was a beautiful shot along the turf and a very powerful one beating keeper Sarah Forbes.
Argentina kept the attack coming… they were awarded a penalty stroke in the 16th minute which they converted, increasing their lead to 2-0. The Canadian side regrouped and created a penalty corner. Now it was Canada's turn to capitalize on the opportunity they had been given, and they did. Less than a minute after they had been scored on by Argentina, Karen MacNeill blasted the ball past the goalie, making the game 2-1.
Argentina ended the half with a flurry of opportunities, but goalkeeper Sarah Forbes stymied their attempts with some formidable saves. They created another penalty corner in the 34th minute and scored (CAN 1-3 ARG)! Then with only 10 seconds left in the half Lisa Faust spoiled the Argie celebration stopping a ball on the line, keeping the scored at 3-1 for Argentina going into the second.
The end-to-end action continued in the second half. Argentina took advantage of the space the Canadian defenders gave them and created a few more penalty corners. The Argies scored in the 45th minute on a penalty corner. They scored their second of the half and fifth of the game in the 54th minute of play. This was the only free play goal they scored against Canada. They took total advantage of the Canadian keeper being screened and riffled it past her.
Canada regained their composure and ended the game in a sound fashion. Coach Dru Marshall said "We had some difficulties technically, but we learned a number of lessons that we will build on throughout the tournament"
Jumbo is the most capped Canadian player. CONGRATULATIONS JUMBO ! |

(By Andrew Griffiths, PlanetFieldHockey.com) Cecilia Rognoni and Argentina's line-up of skilful forwards spoiled Lauralee "Jumbo" Kopeck's 150th game for Canada this evening at the Mona Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. Argentina, with 8 players from their Olympic silver medal squad, beat Canada 5-1 in their pool match here at the 1st Americas Cup for Women. "Disappointed, obviously," was Kopeck's reaction after the game. "5-1 against isn't a score you want any time, let alone an important game." Rognoni, playing in a roving sweeper position, opened the scoring in the 7th minute from a penalty corner, and led Argentina's attack from the back with deceptive and penetrating passes. She had some excellent targets up front in Vanina Oneto, Karina Masotta and Luciana Aymar – and these three caused trouble for the Canadian defence all game. Canada had trouble bringing the ball out of their defence for much of the game. They looked tentative at times, and never found their rhythm. Coach Dru Marshall sees Canada's lack of recent quality game experience as one of the main factors in their performance. "It's hard to play a game like that when we haven't played an international match since August." Canada's last game was in Holland against the Dutch team that would go on to win the Olympic Bronze. "We were too slow in transition," said Marshall. "We gave away too many corners, and too spaced out in the midfield. Some players were too uptight – maybe a little too high for the game." The Canadian coach was not entirely unhappy with her team's performance though. "It was great the way we fought back after the second goal," said Marshall. "As the game went on, we had more confidence in our own play." Oneto netted for Argentina in the sixteenth minute, on a penalty stroke. But Canada came straight back down the other end, Karen MacNeil scoring with a crushing corner strike within a minute off the top of the keeper's pads. Argentina got their third goal from Aicega on a neat penalty corner option in the 35th minute. The second half followed a similar pattern, although Canada seemed to gain some of the confidence that Marshall talked of. Argentina was still too strong though, and scored two more after some brilliant runs from Aymar and Masotta. Rognoni scored again in the 45th minute from a penalty corner, and Garcia hammered in a brilliant reverse-stick goal from the top of the circle in the 54th minute. Canadian goalkeeper Sarah Forbes had a busy day, and a good game. "I'm not satisfied with five goals," she said. "But their forwards have superb skill and they can shoot from anywhere – that's exactly what I got. We gave away too many corners – we have some stuff to sort out at the back." The Canadian team was disappointed after the game, but presented Kopeck with two framed photos of her playing. Kopeck had a good game personally, saving three penalty corner strikes on the line. Canada plays Venezuela tomorrow at 5:00pm and will be looking to build confidence by scoring some goals. Argentina now sits comfortably atop the standings with six points and 19 goals from two games. |
March 8 - Canada - Uruguay : 2-1 - Half-time: 1-0
Canada started off with some pressure on the Uruguayan defence. They were rewarded for their hard work in the 8th minute when Laurelee Jumbo Kopeck blasted a hit off a penalty corner into the net, to give Canada a one goal lead. The Canadian side maintained possession for the majority of the half but Uruguay had a few good scoring chances in the last 3 minutes of the first half, almost taking advantage of the scrambling Canadian defence.
Team Canada had a lull at the beginning of the second half. But, thanks to a powerful drive from the left side, Kristen Taunton scored a beautiful high flick goal on her third (yes, third!) rebound.
Uruguay scored their lone goal on a penalty stroke after a questionable call in the 53rd minute of play.
Canada comes away with 3 points from the game and really looks forward to playing Argentina.
