Canada Belgium
July 8 - Practice - Canada vs. Belgium : 1 - 1 (Half-time: 0 - 1)

1st Period
28' 0-1 BEL

2nd Period
63' 1-1 CAN, Mike Oliver, fg

The game began with us taking it to the Belgians for the first ten minutes. We were awarded a penalty stroke in the fifteenth minute. This was missed by Rob Short and that seemed to change the tone of the game. Belgium came back with a goal five minutes later off a broken corner after another suspect call in favor of the Belgians. It was 1-0 Belgium at the half.

The second half we applied more pressure as the nerves seemed to have settled in. The story of the game of for us was turnovers. Bounced passes, bad traps and untimely dribbles caused most of them. We also gave up a number of unnecessary corners throughout the match. The game looked to be a 1-0 defeat until our new super-sub Mike Oliver entered the match. In his first cap it only took him four minutes to put away his first goal! It was a great move by Pereira in the midfield, which sent the ball across to Jagday on the transfer. Wettlaufer then made a nice deep run to the baseline and received the ball strong. The ball was hit across and 'Moe' tipped it in. It is obvious that our expectations of Oliver are now quite high. Well-done Mike Oliver! The game ended 1-1 and overall for our first match in nine months it was a good start.

2nd Period

59' 2-1 RUS, Uri Safanov, ps

Canada came into the game as favourites over Russia and left with a two-goal win. They did not control the game the way they would have liked, however. Russia put pressure on the Canadian defence – the Canadians never really finding a comfortable rhythm. The Gevorkian brothers were strong in the Russian midfield, while Kullar had an excellent game for Canada, scoring two goals and saving a difficult shot on the Canadian goalline. Russia finishes pool play with no points, and Canada goes through in second place in Pool D. (Report courtesy of PlanetFieldHockey.com)

53' 0-1 SPA, Pol Amat, pc
67' 1-1 CAN, Paul wettlaufer, fg

Canada and Spain battled to 0-0 at the half, Spain with the slight edge in chances and territorial play. In the second half, Spain came out stronger, forcing Mahood in the Canadian goal to make several saves. Kullar saved a penalty corner flick on the line, but soon after, Amat scored on a corner option. The game opened up a bit from there, and Canada pressed forward, earning a field goal from Wettlauffer in the 64th minute. The result means that all four teams in Pool E have one goal and one point after the first day. (Report courtesy of PlanetFieldHockey.com)

July 23 - Canada vs. Belgium : 0 - 1 (Half-time: 0 - 0)

1st Period
     (no score)

2nd Period
36' 0-1 BEL, Patrick Gierts, fg

Belgium started well and had the better of this game early. Mahood was sharp in the Canadian goal, and he had to be in the first half. The game was scoreless at the half. Canada were caught sleeping in the first minute after the interval – Kholopov came down the right side for Belgium, beat the Canadian defence and crossed to Gierts who finished an easy goal.

Canada came to life as the second half wore on but could not score, despite some strong attacking hockey from Pereira, and a skilful spell from Peter Short near the end of the game.

Belgium moves into a strong position with the win with four points - 1st in Pool E. (Report courtesy of PlanetFieldHockey.com)

July 25 - Canada vs. New Zealand : 3 - 5 (Half-time: 1 - 1)

2nd Period

69' 2-5 NZE, Umesh Parag, fg
70' 3-5 CAN, Rob Short, fg

New Zealand dominated this Pool E game, attacking well and pressuring the Canadian defence from the start. NZ earned 13 penalty corners to Canada’s 1, and only Canadian keeper Mike Mahood kept the game close early. NZ scored in the 25th minute on a corner but Rob Short equalised a minute later for Canada. Both teams came out attacking again in the second half. Again NZ had the better of the play but couldn’t score until the 54th minute, a beautiful deflection for Archibald. Once again Short had an answer, replying with a corner goal within 2 minutes to equalise.

From here the game was wide open and NZ scored 3 goals in succession before Rob Short finished his hat-trick with a consolation goal for Canada just before the final hooter. (Report courtesy of PlanetFieldHockey.com)

Canada India
July 28 - Cross-over 5-8 - Canada vs. India : 1 - 2 (Half-time: 0 - 1)

1st Period
4' 0-1 IND, Arjun Halappa, fg

2nd Period
42' 0-2 IND, Bipin Fernandes, fg
57' 1-2 CAN, Rob Short, pc

India put Canada on the back foot after only 4 minutes on a smart reverse stick goal from Halappa after he had created space on the left of the circle. Canada settled into their rhythm though, forcing India to attack down their left. Canada absorbed the pressure well and created good scoring opportunities of their own, but were unable to score before a defensive error allowed Fernandes to put India 2-0 up early in the second half.

As India looked content to defend this 2-goal lead, Canada squandered several chances on penalty corners until they finally scored on their 7th corner – a rebound by Rob Short with 12 minutes to go in the game.

Canada pressured late but were unable to get the equaliser. India qualifies for the World Cup and takes the weight of a famous hockey nation’s anxiety off their shoulders for now.

Canada, disappointed, went back to the changing room to begin recharging the batteries for tomorrow’s key qualification game against NZ. But to compound the Canadians’ misery, when they arrived they found their changing room had been looted – many players losing their wallets, watches and jewellery. Players of the game (unofficial):
- Canada: Bindi Kullar
- India: Arjun Halappa
