There is nothing better than winning your final game. The kids played an outstanding game. We outplayed the Americans from start to finish. The first half was played at a very fast pace with both teams creating turnovers and attacking chances. It ended with Canada clearly outplaying the Americans but had no goals to show for their efforts. We got great contributions from all our players and made quick substitutions to keep the pace on the field high. Early in the second half, the Americans pressed us with long balls from their back row but the defence held and we were able to sustain the attack for the remainder of the half. We earned a number of corners midway through the half; the kids executed the corner options well but the American goalkeeper came up big on four successive corners. The right side attack with Stephanie Jameson and Robin Leslie continued to penetrate the American defence. With 12 minutes to go we were awarded a penalty stroke and Stephanie Jameson for the second consecutive day made no mistake from the mark. The game ended with Canada continuing to take the play to the USA. A great win and some redemption after losing to the USA at last years qualifier. A final placing of 13th - exactly where we came in at the start of the tournament. We came away from this tournament with a 3-4 record, bettering our record from the 97 World Cup. Thanks for the entire staff for their work over the past weeks, months and even years. It's been a great ride. Congratulations to the 18 athletes for doing such a great job representing their country here in Buenos Aires. - Goalkeeper: Emily Menzies - Sweeper: Lucy Shaw - Defence: Suzanne Simpson, Laura Balakshin, Julia Morton - Midfield: Erin Morton (Cap), Ali Johnstone, Stephanie Jameson - Forwards: Lauren McLean, Ashley Reaburn, Robin Leslie Substitutes Used: Kate Lindsay 28', Nicole Perry 48', Stephanie Quinn 13', Elizabeth Roberts 28' Substitutes Not Used: Katie McNeil (gk) Not dressed: Alisa Carey, Mo O'Connor |
Today was another must win situation - win and get a chance to play the USA tomorrow for 13th/14th. The team started well earning a PC in the second minute. Lucy Shaw converted from a direct shot. Minutes later Ashley Reaburn dispossesed the Russian defender going in alone against the goalkeeper. She made no mistake on a great shot and we were quickly up 2-0. The Russians had difficulty penetrating our half as the kids played very well defencively not allowing the Russians any running space. Just prior to half time we were awarded a penalty stroke and Stephanie Jameson converted on a beautiful shot to the low right hand side. The half ended with us up 3-0. We continued to dominate the play throughout the second half and were able to make a number of circle penetrations. We scored our fourth goal from a rebound on a corner - Stephanie Quinn fired the ball on a rebound off the Russian keeper. Our final goal came from a great baseline run from Stephanie Quinn, sliding the ball across the face of the goal for Stephanie Jameson who finished strong. This was a very strong game for us and it was great to see the good goal scoring. - Goalkeeper: Emily Menzies - Sweeper: Lucy Shaw - Defence: Suzanne Simpson, Laura Balakshin, Julia Morton - Midfield: Erin Morton (Cap), Ali Johnstone, Stephanie Jameson - Forwards: Lauren McLean, Ashley Reaburn, Robin Leslie Substitutes Used: Kate Lindsay 25', Katie McNeil (gk) 61', Nicole Perry 17', Stephanie Quinn 23', Elizabeth Roberts 44' Not dressed: Alisa Carey, Mo O'Connor |

Today would not be our day. We started well with good attacking play early and were rewarded with a penalty corner. We were unable to convert and minutes later India scored on a free play goal opportunity. We continued to move the ball forward, but were caught on a counter attack and the Indian forward put her team ahead 2-0. We seemed to settle down defensively, and we were able to generate more solid chances but the Indian goalkeeper played extremely well. Down 2-0 at half, we made some changes going with four up front in an effort to sustain more attack. However, a breakdown in the backrow marking led to a free play goal early in the half. They would score two more field goals and a penalty corner goal with the game ending 6-0. A disappointing result but we were outmatched in all areas today. We meet Russia in our classification crossover - a win earns us a chance to play the Americans on Friday in the 13th/14th game. We will need to set the tempo against the Russians early and hope to create turnovers in their backline. The kids feel confident and are ready to go! - Goalkeeper: Emily Menzies - Sweeper: Ali Johnstone - Defence: Suzanne Simpson, Lucy Shaw, Julia Morton - Midfield: Ashley Reaburn, Erin Morton (Cap), Stephanie Jameson - Forwards: Lauren McLean, Stephanie Quinn, Robin Leslie Substitutes Used: Alisa Carey 8', Kate Lindsay 12', Katie McNeil (gk) 52', Maureen O'Connor 9', Nicole Perry 43' Not dressed: Laura Balakshin, Elizabeth Roberts |
Today's game was a crucial match for the girls - a win would put them one step closer to a top twelve finish in the tournament. The game started off very well for the Canadian side - they pressured the Welsh backfield and notched their first goal at the 4 minute mark in a chip shot over the keeper by Stephanie Quinn. Six minutes later, Robin Leslie put Canada up 2-0 on a reverse chip shot past the Welsh keeper. The Welsh came out fired up in the second half putting two forwards high collapsing on the Canadian players every time they had possession. The Welsh scored their first goal on a defensive breakdown in the circle. They continued to pressure the Canadians and scored the equalizer off a lay-off left on a penalty corner. With 15 minutes to go, the Welsh scored the go ahead goal off another penalty corner. The Canadians fought hard the last 10 minutes but were unable to score. The loss to the Welsh team puts Canada in a must win situation against India on Monday if they wish to finish in the top twelve. - Goalkeeper: Emily Menzies - Sweeper: Ali Johnstone - Defence: Alisa Carey, Lucy Shaw, Julia Morton - Midfield: Ashley Reaburn, Erin Morton, Stephanie Jameson - Forwards: Lauren McLean, Stephanie Quinn, Robin Leslie Substitutes Used: Kate Lindsay 14', Maureen O'Connor 14', Elizabeth Roberts 16' Substitutes Not Used: Katie McNeil (gk) Not dressed: Laura Balakshin, Nicole Perry, Suzanne Simpson |
In today's game the athletes came out with a lot of energy-pressuring the Russian defenders and generating a lot of attack in the first half. The up front pressure paid off when we were awarded a penalty corner 15 minutes into the second half. Ashley Reaburn pounced on a loose ball and put it high into the back of the net. Russia then scored an equalizer on a break through out of their midfield. A couple of minutes later, the girls stormed back to go ahead on a brilliant goal by Lauren MacLean: a diving one hand reverse shot past the sprawling Russian keeper. Canada defeated Russia 2-1, placing third in their pool. Canada now heads into the classification round facing Wales tomorrow and India on Monday. - Goalkeeper: Emily Menzies - Sweeper: Ali Johnstone - Defence: Suzanne Simpson, Lucy Shaw, Julia Morton - Midfield: Ashley Reaburn, Erin Morton, Stephanie Jameson - Forwards: Lauren McLean, Stephanie Quinn, Robin Leslie Substitutes Used: Maureen O'Connor 10', Nicole Perry 55', Elizabeth Roberts 13' Substitutes Not Used: Alisa Carey, Katie McNeil (gk) Not dressed: Laura Balakshin, Kate Lindsay |

Today our team played against a very strong explosive Korean offence. The game was played at a very high speed with Koreans forcing the pace at all times. We knew this was a team that would be lethal if given space, so we played to "make the field smaller" and played a collapsing defence. The Koreans scored on 5 of 11 penalty corner attempts. Their striker had a highlight night with a 45% conversion rate. They were all on direct shots and into both corners. Our team played hard and created two great chances early in the second half with the score 2-0 at the time. Our team was overmatched, but the effort was always there - they played hard but on this day the Koreans were simply too good. The other three goals came from field play. The first: a beautiful reverse stick shot from the top of the D beating Menzies cleanly. The second: a diving deflection from a right wing cross and finally a rebound from a scramble in front of the net. Next up is Russia. We need a tie or a win to go through as third in our pool. This placing would be critical in terms of our potential second round matchups. - Goalkeeper: Emily Menzies - Sweeper: Ali Johnstone - Defence: Suzanne Simpson, Lucy Shaw, Julia Morton - Midfield: Ashley Reaburn, Erin Morton (Cap), Stephanie Jameson - Forwards: Lauren McLean, Stephanie Quinn, Robin Leslie Substitutes used: Laura Balakshin 54', Kate Lindsay 12', Nicole Perry 22', Elizabeth Roberts 21' Substitutes not used: Katie McNeil (gk) Not dressed: Alisa Carey, Maureen O'Connor (ankle injury) |

Preparing our side to play against the worlds number four ranked team meant focusing on four important concepts: play with confidence and composure, maintaining ball possession in the midfield, being disciplined in our defence coverage and ball support in our attacking 25. The game was played fairly evenly for the first 15 minutes with most of the play occurring between the 25s. England scored first from a breakdown in the circle midway through the half. The second goal was the result of a scramble from a penalty corner. We settled in and played much better attacking hockey for the last 12 minutes of the half. A goal keeping change had Emily Menzies take the field for the second half. Early on, England created good chances from our turnovers and were able to convert from a penalty corner. The kids responded well and played a very strong final 25 minutes creating some good attacking play through the midfield. It was a good first outing and we will have to be even sharper tomorrow to harness the running of the Koreans. - Goalkeeper: Katie McNeill - Sweeper: Ali Johnstone (Cap) - Defence: Suzanne Simpson, Lucy Shaw, Julia Morton - Midfield: Lauren Maclean, Ashley Reaburn, Erin Morton - Forwards: Kate Lindsay, Stephanie Quinn, Robin Leslie Substitutes used: Emily Menzies (gk) 36', Maureen O'Connor 13', Nicole Perry 25', Elizabeth Roberts 52' Substitutes not used: Alisa Carey Not dressed: Laura Balakshin, Stephanie Jameson |

The day started early with a 6:45am departure for the National Stadium... The first half saw both teams exchange chances early from defensive breakdowns. Wales scored first from a turnover inside our 25. Minutes later, Lauren MacLean scored from the top of the "D" after the ball was crossed from the right wing. With only a few minutes left prior to the half, Wales went ahead on a penalty corner conversion. The second half was played evenly until the midway point when Canada pressed the Welsh and were rewarded with a great goal from Steph Quinn sent in alone on the goalkeeper from a through ball from MacLean. Canada struck again minutes later on a rebound - again it was Steph Quinn getting the ball in the net. A turnover inside the defending 25 led to a goal that allowed Wales to tie the score with just under one minute remaining. The team had some good play throughout the match but will have to do a better job protecting the ball when in possession. Two days to go... the kids have a day off tomorrow and we will train on Monday prior to our match Tuesday with England. |

Today's practice game was an opportunity for everyone to get some playing time prior to the start of the tournament. The first 20 minutes was played fairly evenly with both teams showing good ball movement through the midfield. In the final 15 minutes of the half, India began to penetrate our circle and were able to score from a baseline attack. The half ended 0-1. In the second half, we gave up some early chances but the defence held and our midfielders began to create some good attacking play. India scored its second goal from a high shot that was deflected in front of the net. In the last 15 minutes of the game, we pressed hard with the Indian sweeper pulling a ball off the line from a rebound on a short corner. A few more good chances before the end of the game, but we were unable to capitalize. Thanks to Alan Brahmst and his work with the kids prior to leaving. Alan, the kids did a good job today in the backfield! |
