Thursday June 15: by Shankar Premakanthan

Shankar Premakanthan Day 6, the day after our off day, though challenging at first, proved to be one of the best days on the field for our team.

Though everyone was pretty drained after a day of exploring the beautiful city of Vienna, we all still managed to get ourselves out of bed at 7:00am for an early breakfast. After our breakfast we packed and left for the field for another practice.

After one and half hours of practice in the sweldering heat of Vienna (around 33 degrees Celsius...), we were all really hungry and tired. So after a most filling lunch, we all went back to out hotel for what would prove to be a most interesting rest period before our evening game.

It would seem that during our rest period some players wanted to try their hands at the art of body painting and taping. Unfortunately, Tim and Inderjit were the subjects of these experiments. Tim went for a short nap and woke up to find a few interesting art designs on his back. Inderjit, unfortunately, got a partial leg-hair removal during his nap, duct tape on your legs is not the most pleasant thing...

Next on the agenda was our match against what we were told was the best team in Austria. We were all now well rested and regenerated from our rest period and were ready to play! The match itself was fairly competitive, both teams had their chances but strong defence prevailed in the end and at halftime the score was even at 1-1. Scotty scored our goal with a "beautiful" backhand shot.

In the second half, once we got down to our game plan, we slowly took over the match and pulled away. We got two goals, one from Peter, who hammered home a goal midway through the second half and one from Ravi on a "powerful" short corner blast (how many times did it bounce?).

In all, we were very pleased with our efforts and we are all looking forward to our upcoming tournament this weekend.

Wednesday June 14: by Scott Sandison

Scott Sandison Today started off just as the past few days started with an early morning jog and stretch followed by breakfast and then practice. Then we had the much anticipated DAY OFF! For those of us who have been on the junior team for a while, this was our first real day off and we could barely believe it was true. We were sure John and Louis were just toying with us. We were able to use this time to explore the beautiful surroundings of Vienna. There was plenty to see and I think everyone burned up atleast 1 or 2 rolls of film.

As most of us have been struggling to abide by the "no going shirtless" rule, Shankar came out wearing jeans to go on our full day tour. He kept telling us he wasn't hot but I think that's just because he's got heat stroke and gone crazy.

Some of us also made time to do a little shopping. Tim did more than a little as I think he'll need to buy another bag to bring home all his new atire. Others just took the extra time to relax and watch some football as there has been great coverage of Euro 2000.

Everyone came back around 7:00 after a full day of excitment in good spirits with several stories to share. Especially the one about Raz and a sailor but we'll save that one for next time!

Tuesday June 13: by Tim Pershick

Allright... day four... how exciting it was! It started off at 6:30 in the morning with a good ol' run followed by breakfast. We then got ready for practice and took the field roughly at 11:00am. After our rough and tough practice, we left back for the hotel and then on to the usual spot for lunch... mmmmmmmmmmm... bread. We had some well deserved brake time after lunch and then had a good 1 hour meeting before game time.

When we arrived at the pitch, emotions were high in anticipation of delivering a good "butt-kicking" to the local Austrians. However when game time came around... we found out that they were short a few and we had to supply them with two of our own soldiers (witch included one of our goalies). Because of this news, we as players decided we shouldn't destroy the opposition knowing that our players were on the team (and we didn't want to harm our goalie with out forcefull shots!). So we only beat them 3-0 (we could have scored much more but, like I said, we didn't want to harm our own goalie physically or mentally). So we let the Austrian boys leave the pitch we some dignity, having only lost by 3.

After the game we celebrated by hitting the local bar and drinking until the cows came home and we didn't hear from Scott until 11:00am the next day... NAW... Actually we went back to the hotel and showered, then off to the restaurant to eat another fine meal. We all headed back to the hotel as a team and went to bed together as a team!

C'était Razmik Varoujean, gardien de but d'Equipe Canada Junior!

Au revoir!

Sunday June 11: by Stuart Dickinson

Our first full day in Vienna. We were up early for a 7:30am run with our favourite trainer R2 Neetu. My entire room (Pete, Indy, Scotty, and myself) woke up at 5:00am, so we had some time to kill before the team run.

We knew we were in for a hot day because at 7:30 in the morning, in front of our hotel, it was already too hot. After a good stretch and a hearty breakfast, we spent some time loungin', before heading to the pitch for a 12:00 practice.

After almost 20 hours of traveling for the Vancouver guys, and a little bit less for the TO boys, we were all ready to stretch out our legs and have a run. It was a pretty good practice and an absolute scorcher of a day. 34 degrees and 80% humidity according to the Austrian weather people. Thankfully, our coaching staff and trainer have got us on a strict regimen of constant drinking of water. No coffee, no coke and lots of water.

Back to the hotel and out for lunch. Most of the guys just crashed for the afternoon as the jetlag was beginning to kick in. The heat in our rooms is stifling (except for Rav's room, which is the only one with no sun and a portable air conditioner!). Interesting: how did the captain's room end up with the a/c? Hmmmmm... I wonder... We'll have to go upstairs on that one.

With time to kill in the heat, no one has enough energy to do anything but lie around. All I can say is: thank god for Euro 2000! We can watch the same game 3 times in a row and we're getting live coverage without getting up at some ungodly hour in the morning!

Evening saw us hitting the turf for the day's second practice which started out as a technical session and ended up being a little more active. Good to see we've got some legs left in us.

Ty, Pete and I have been busy checkin' out all the slammed european model cars. Austrians drive with seemingly no organization and very fast, so I can't figure out why all their cars aren't dinged up.

After a late dinner we were all ready for bed, so that's where we went.

PS - Thank you to Rick Roberts for the German lessons. Unfortunately, no one can remember anything other than Danke, which we cannot pronounce correctly, and a couple of choice words which I shall not repeat.

Grosse-Got from Vienna!

Today was the first day of our Junior teams tour and I must say it was quite an eventful one. We spent most of the day flying and for most it was a relaxing flight. Unfortunatly I was not so lucky... I was seated behind a group of rather unrully characters. They snuck aboard three bottles of Vodka and got super hammered then proceeded to pass out and vomit all over each other. Their seats were fully reclined leaving me little room. My drunk friends were being looked after by a friend in the isleway. I got up to go talk to the boys sitting in front. I came back to find the guy who was looking after his drunk friends sitting in my seat and using my turban as a garbage can! He placed the cups they had been drinking in into my turban. Needless to say I was rather upset.

Luckly I was able to find an empty seat and finish off the flight there.

We then enjoyed a 2 hour layover in Amsterdam. We used the time to take in some Dutch culture. The highlight of our stay was our pictures of orange clogs. On to Vienna, where we landed around 6pm. We were a little overwhelmed by the heat: it is about 35 degrees and real humid. We found our way to the hotel which is located close to the picturesque Danube river. It was good to meet up with the boys from the east coast again.

We are all really excited and cannot wait to hit the pitch for our first match.
