Wednesday February 16 - USA - Canada : 3-0
Canada came out strong creating 8 penalty corners in the first half, one resulting in a penalty stroke that we failed to capitalise on... The USA opened the scoring on a penalty corner goal in the 31st minute of play. Canada, missing captain Laurelee Kopeck due to a torn tricep muscle, were taken advantage of by the USA creating numerous breakaways but goalkeeper Sarah Forbes was brilliant stopping every one.
The USA scored their second goal in the 52nd minute of the game on a reverse stick shot into the top corner of the net. The Canadians disputed the call (claimimg the shot was from outside the D) but to no avail. The USA then pressed even harder, scoring their third goal in the 63rd minute on a great shot into the corner off a penalty corner.

Well, the sun came out today and the temperature warmed up as we concluded our tour. The final game ended in a 2-1 loss with Carla "the stroker" Sommerville putting us on the board with a beautifully placed ball in the top left corner. Despite the loss, we pulled it together and played well for the final game.
As the title suggests, this tour has not only been about hockey. Let us take a moment to share our exciting adventures. As everyone took off to the infamous outlet malls and movie theatres, KT, Tinger, Jenny and Beaner found themselves engrossed in the finer worlds of biochemistry, organic chem and body composition. WooHoo!!!! Now, this may not sound exciting to most, and it wasn't to us either, but we managed to stay on track and get an exam written and other exams studied for.
A lot has been learned on this trip (both hockey and school wise) and we know the work that has to be done over the next few months before we unite again. It will be sad to leave the warm weather for the small comforts that our igloos in Canada provide, but it will be nice to see our dogs an sleds again. We hope you enjoyed the daily diary and we will be back on line in the summer. Cheers!!!
Our first sleep in of the tour! Of course that also meant our first trip to Denny's rather than cereal in our hotel rooms.
Today we had just one practice which was a bit of a relief for some after a full week of solid training. After lunch, the group split in two directions: one went to the ice cream shop that the Yanks so generously directed us to (it's all part of their plan!). The other van went to the outlet mall for a chance to get away from the hotel for the afternoon. The last few exam writers (KT, Tinger and Aoibhinn) wrote tonight and can now join the rest of us in some serious down time. All in all, some more relaxation and prep time for our big game tomorrow; game 5 of the series...
Gotta get some sleep!

So as we settled down for the evening, we took time to take care of our bodies through hot-tubbing, physio and lots of ice packs (Amy Mac took one for the team in the form of a cut lip to add a new stat to the facial injury list). Studiers worked away, others read, but nearly all of us tuned in later for a dramatic ER episode which turned out to be a fitting end to a rather traumatic day.
Deb Cuthbert here... reporting with the Team Diary for February 16th, 2000.
My first time here in San Diego at the Olympic Training Centre and what a place it is ! Wow... they didn't lie about the food either. I went for a run the other day and was very surprised to see Mexico from the boundary of the Centre. It is a superb facility for athletes of all kinds.
Yesterday was a pretty eventful day for team Canada. We had a game in the morning. On the way to the Centre, the umpire announced that she had forgotten her shoes and the van had to do a quick U-turn to rectify this small mishap. On the way back, the Canadian team demonstrated their "Good Samaritan" rule and helped push a car that had broken down into a gas station. The old rescuing of a damsel in distress.
Later that afternoon we had a super quick shopping spree at a local factory outlet. I think some of the girls now share stock in Nike! In the evening the American hosted us for a delightful Italian dinner at Dlish. Some people, however, would argue the fact that their dinner were in fact "NOT DELISH"...
Over and out in San Diego...
No game today but we did have two practices to prepare for game three tomorrow.
Jumbo was up early to check her most unusual tricep injury and fortunately the x-rays did not show any bone fractures but unfortunately, although she is trying to convince us she will be ready to play in three days, I think that is a little optimistic. She can however manage to hold her tray full of yummy cafeteria food all by herself!
In other news, I made the perfect sandwich at lunch today by melting the cheese inside the bagel in the toaster... Good one eh?
The evening was spent watching "Who wants to marry a millionaire" and we all decided that we would be much better matches for the millionaire whose second home is Vancouver than the questionable bachellerette that he chose, so we will all be sending in our applications for the next contest!
Hello Avid sports fans!!
Today was Valentines day! I for one was very happy to be spending it with the team. This is the only place that I am assured a special treat from a secret Valentine. When we got here we drew names for a person who we were to get a yummy treat for. It was a win / win situation for everyone.
Today we also got to play the Americans again. We gave them a good fight, but once again had a bit of trouble putting the ball into the net. The good thing is that we are scoring within minutes after they score... I guess we just have to learn how to reverse that order. Unfortunately, our captain Jumbo Kopeck tore her tricept while making a diving tackle... yaah OUCH!! She is a tough cookie and I am sure will be back sooner than later.
We are down two games in a five game series, but are determined to win it. This is when all those years of watching the Stanley Cup playoffs starts to pay off. We know it is not over till the last game, even if we have to go for the 6 overtime periods.
To all those mum's out there, you should know that we are eating very well. This cafeteria is amazing. Fresh fruit and veggies every day! Yummy fresh baked bread and any kind of cereal that you would like. For the milk and dairies, there is an assortment of cheese, milk and even frozen yogurt. Every now and again, we can get a big steak and some chicken too. Oh yeah, and that last food group... Vit C! They have chocolate cheesecake, chocolate chip cookies, hot chocolate with whip cream, chocolate ice cream with chocolate sprinkles and the best on so far was warm chocolate brownie with a bit of ice cream -- topped with hot fudge sauce... yum yum give me some!!
Of course we are training really hard to work all of this off. Okay, gotta run... literally! We will be in touch with the the inside scoop. Thanks for reading!
No turf time today as it is being used by hundreds of little kids playing in a "futures program". So... Dru booked track time for a 5,000m times run. Needless to say, we weren't exactly thrilled at the opportunity to strut our stuff as people were a bit stiff and tired from yesterday' run around. Four of us did a bike test instead of running while everyone took to the track. It was a great effort by all my teaammates and we pushed each other hard with some great results. It was then off to lunch at the cafeteria that never stops and then a team meeting to catch up on team goals and objectives. Some players stayed at the center afterwards to study as many of us are athlete-students this week while a majority headed back to the hotel for some R and R. The evening was capped off by another visit to the dinner hall and then a quiet evening at the hotel. As tomorrow is Valentine's Day, we have arranged secret cupids for some fun and good treats.
Welcome everyone to the world of the Senior Canadian Women's Field Hockey Team! This being the inaugural entry of our Team Diary, I can say I am honoured. We were going to have Jumbo type something but she types like a hen pecking at the keyboard. I can say that as she has been my roomate and we are the two longest standing members of the team at this point.
Yesterday, we woke up to a very exciting day: our first game together since our Bronze Medal at the Pan American Games. We had a very important uniform ceremony where we hand out uniforms to everyone each tour they participate in and we have a special flag that a player signs if it is their first senior tour with the team. We had two new signatures today with Becky Price and Annabel Duncan-Webb joining the players that have represented their country at the Senior level. Congratulations you two!!
We headed out for practice at the Arco Olympic Training Center which lies in beautiful scenery on the outskirts of San Diego. The energy level was high as we were all very eager to get on the turf and start practicing again. After a 2 hour hit around and quick review of our systems and penalty corners, it was off to lunch at the cafeteria that never closes (yummy!!!). The food here is one of the high points as it is always good and for some reason our weigh ins in the morning seem to get a little heavier as time goes by.
Quick team meeting and then GAME time. We felt we had something to prove as this was the team that knocked us out of the Pan Am Gold Medal game. We came out hard and furious. Unfortunately they scored on a free play in the 19th minute... We surged even harder and had a number of chances to put the ball in the net but didn't capitalize. The play was quite rough at times but we likened it to a good Hockey Night in Canada rumble.
The second half saw us dominate and get a penalty stroke for our efforts to make the game 2-1 (they had scored on a penalty corner 1 minute earlier). The game ended with us pressing hard in their end for the last 5 minutes but simply unable to put the ball in the net. A disappointing result as we felt we had dominated a team that has just come back from a trip to Argentina where they had played top calibre teams. It was a quiet evening with some people getting physio and others relaxing.
