July 2 - Final - Canada - Cuba : 1 - 2

Canada lost to Cuba in the Final of the inaugural Americas, with an automatic qualification for the 2002 World Cup at stake...

Canada started well, controling the ball while Cuba was only dangerous in counter-attack. Both teams had chances but half-time was reached with no score.

Ten minutes into the second half, Canada obtained a penalty corner and Peter Milkovich scored with a superb flick in the roof of the net. Canada created more chances but couldn't score. On a counter-attack, Cuba obtained a penalty stroke for an alleged stick tackle in the circle and equalized at 1-1.

Soon after, Cuba scored a field goal from a beautiful reverse stick shot that beat Mike Mahood in goal. With 7 minutes left, Canada tried to equalize but couldn't generate more chances and time ran out...

It was a good game, Cuba has obviously improved a lot and the home crowd as well as the heat played in their favor. The performance of some Canadian players was disappointing today: they either didn't play to their potential or forgot about the game plan.

Cuba automatically qualifies for the 2002 World Cup in Malaysia. Canada qualifies for the World Cup Qualification Tournament in 2001, in Scotland.

In this important game, Robin D'Abreo reached his 150th cap for Canada. CONGRATULATIONS  ROBIN !

June 30 - Semi-Final - Canada - Argentina : 2 - 2 (penalty strokes: Canada wins 3 - 0)

Canada defeated Argentina in a dramatic semi-final to reach the Final of the Americas Cup on Sunday!

Argentina put pressure on the Canadian defense in the first half but couldn't capitalize. Canada opened the scoring midway through the half on a free hit taken by Peter Milkovich and deflected by Andrew Griffiths. Late in the half, Argentina equalized on a deflection that beat Mike Mahood in goal. Score at half time: 1-1.

Canada controled more the play in the second half and score on a penalty corner by Paul Wettlaufer with about ten minute to go in the game. Argentina continued to press on the Canadian defense and were awarded a penalty stroke but the striker shot wide! The game continued to go back and forth, and Argentina managed to obtain a penalty corner in the last minute of play... and tied the game at 2-2 with no time left on the clock!

No Golden Goal was scored in the two 7.5 minutes periods of overtime so the result had to be settled with a series of 5 penalty strokes. The first three Canadian strikers (Andrew Griffiths, Peter Milkovich and Ian Bird) scored while Mike Mahood stopped the first three Argentinean shots!

Canada will now play the host Cuba in the Final of this inaugural Americas Cup, with the winner earning an automatically qualification for the 2002 World Cup in Malaysia. The game has been moved to 10:30 in the morning to avoid the scorching heat of the afternoon.

June 27 - Canada - Mexico : 13 - 0

Canada defeated Mexico 13 - 0. Canada once against had a fast start and we were up 3-0 in the first 10 minutes. Canada dominated the match and once again only dressed one goalie.

Goalscorers were: Andrew Griffiths (6 goals), Paul Wettlaufer (2 goals), Ken Pereira (1 goal), Peter Milkovich (1 goal), Rob Short (1 goal), Chris Gifford (1 goal) and Scott Mosher (1 goal). A number of goals were highlight material but I do not want to blow this out of proportion as we were playing a weaker team.

A highlight of the game was that Rick Roberts celebrated his 150th cap for Canada and was the game Captain. Rick has had an eventful career playing for Canada and his hardwork and perserverance has paid off. CONGRATULATIONS  RICK !

Next game for us is the semi-final on Friday against Argentina. We look forward to that match! It should be a good one and, as always , it will be classic, hard fought match between 2 good teams.

June 26 - Canada - USA : 4 - 0

Canada defeated USA 4-0 this morning in Cuba. There was a ceremony just prior to the start of the match to honour Peter Milkovich for representing Canada in 250 International Matches.

Canada dominated USA from the opening minute and Rob Short scored a goal just 2 minutes into the game. This was followed by a penalty corner goal by Alan Brahmst in the 5th minute. From that point, there was no question about the outcome of the game. Most of the game was played in the USA half except for a couple of runs into the Canadian end.

Canada only dressed 1 goalkeeper (Mike Mahood) and 15 field players for this match.

Scott Mosher scored a penalty corner goal midway in the first half and the rest of the team played well to create a number of scoring opportunities. The second half was similar to the first, with Bindi Kullar finishing the scoring from a deflection.

The Canadian Team passing, leads and ball movement was quite good and left the USA team to chase the Canadian players for most of the game. We play Mexico tomorrow afternoon. This will be the last pool game before the semi-final on Friday.

The only problem today was the lack of water for the past 18 hours. There seems to be a problem with the water supply and it has finally been fixed this afternoon.

The game against USA was special for Canadian Captain Peter Milkovich: it was his 250th international cap, an exceptional milestone achieved by very few players on the international scene. Peter won his first cap back in 1988 against Belgium, then shortly after was selected for the Olympic Games in Seoul (the last time the Canadian Field Hockey Team qualified for the Games). He has since worked relentlessly to improve his skills and was one of the first Canadian players to decide to go and learn in the much stronger competition abroad (Australia, France and most recently in Holland). He was rewarded by a selection to the World XI that played against the current World and Olympic Champions, Holland, during the festivities organized in 1999 for the FIH (Fédération International de Hockey) 75th Anniversary. Peter has played in two World Cups (1990 and 1998), three Pan American Games (1991, 1995 and 1999), one Commonwealth Games (1998) and Sydney will be his second Olympic experience. Peter has certainly played a key role in the ascension of the Canadian Team, relentlessly pushing himself and his teammates. CONGRATULATIONS  PETER !

June 23 - Canada - Chile : 3 - 2

Canada defeated Chile 3-2 in a match that lacked fluid passing or creative, dynamic play. Chile relied mostly on counterattacks while Canada was always moving the ball to create attacking play.

Canada opened scoring early in the game when Peter Milkovich scored a great reverse stick goal to beat the goalie. Paul Wettlaufer had beat about 5 defenders and then made a great pass to Peter who beat the goalie.

A few minutes later, Bindi Kullar scored a deflection goal from Robin D'Abreo and Paul Wettlaufer. The rest of the half was played in midfield and Canada appeared to be heading into halftime with a 2-0 score. However, with just seconds left, Chile was awarded a penalty corner and scored to make it 2-1 for Canada at the half.

The second half started well for us and Rob Short scored a penalty corner goal. Chile started to press forward and was rewarded when it scored a field goal with 10 minutes to go. Canada then ran out the clock with no further chances for Chile.

We now have 2 days off before we play USA. We will need the time to recover from playing in the hot weather.

June 22 - Canada - Jamaica : 9 - 0

Canada defeated Jamaica 9-0 in a one sided match to start the Americas Cup. Paul Wettlaufer scored 3 goals and Peter Milkovich with a pair led the scoring. Mike Mahood got the shutout. Canada dominated the match and had about 30 shots at net. Several hit the post and the Jamaican goalie played well to save some.

The match was played in the hot sun , with the temperature over 33 degrees at 11:00am.

A good start but we should not get complacent!

In a major upset late today, Cuba defeated Argentina 3-1! It was a good match with Argentina opening score early but Cuba played well in front of a capacity crowd at the stadium and scored 3 times - twice from penalty corners and a penalty stroke.
