           WORTH NOTING...

Who are your Mentors?

  • Jurgen Lankau, pioneer of Canadian field hockey, developed the Tsawwassen field hockey program;
  • Wim Van Heumen, National Coach of Holland in the early 80's.
What other coaches do you take notice of?
  • Chuck Knoll, Pittsburgh legend; Mike Holmgren, formerly of Green Bay; Jeff Wannstedt, defensive coordinator in Dallas; Walsh of the 49ers. All great team builders. It is about how they ran their teams, how they got the most out of their players;
  • Scotty Bowman, a winner;
  • Glen Sather, no payroll but finds a way to get the job done;
  • Phil Jackson, motivator, makes players responsible/accountable to the team, knows the importance of respect.
What do you like to see in a player?
  • A fighting spirit;
  • I don't like a "yes man";
  • A player that is willing to try new things in order get better.
How do you balance you family time between BC Hydro and Coaching? It is very hard... Fortunately, my wife Diane knows what the sacrifices are about because of her association with the women's National Team in the early 80's. It is difficult to miss out on moments involving my son Arif.
(Note: Diane Mahy-Virjee played on the National Team from 1980 to 1985; she won a Silver Medal at the 1983 World Cup in Malaysia and played in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles)

"Don't give me excuses, find a way to get it done."
