Did you know ?

The first Canada Games were organized in 1967 in Quebec City: 1,800 athletes from 10 Provinces competed in 15 winter sports. The first Canada Summer Games were organized in 1969 in Halifax and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Canada Games logo The Canada Games logo (left) is a stylised "C" made up of 13 segments representing the 10 Provinces and 3 Territories participating in the Games. It encloses a maple leaf and symbolizes the union of the Provinces and Territories in Canada.

The Canada Games are now held every two years, alternating between winter and summer, and are a key event in the development of Canada's young athletes. The most notable athletes having participated in the Canada Games are: Toller Cranston (figure skating, 1967), Debbie Brill (track & field, 1969), Gaetan Boucher (speed skating, 1971), Brian Orser (figure skating, 1975), Sylvie Daigle (speed skating, 1979), Angela Chalmers (track & field, 1981), Lennox Lewis (boxing, 1983), Bruny Surin (track & field, 1985), Catriona LeMay Doan (speed skating, 1987), Anne Montminy (diving, 1991), Steve Nash (basketball, 1993), Alexandre Despatie (diving, 1997).

More than 5,000 athletes and officials will participate in the 2001 Canada Games in London, Ontario. It is a real community effort: more than 6,500 volunteers are necessary to run the Games smoothly and more than 13,000 people signed up to help as volunteers!.

More on the Opening Ceremonies

Opening CeremoniesThe Opening Ceremonies were a sellout: 15,011 spectators, plus 1,000 performers, technical people and media. They were also broadcast live across the country on TSN.

The torch was lit by rower Marnie McBean, a graduate of University of Western Ontario (host of the Games) who went on to win 3 Gold Medal at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. She later told reporters that "lighting the torch in front of thousands of young athletes was a moving moment and pretty fantastic".
